Modes of Interpreting
Telephone Interpreting services are widely used in situations where there is a need to translate over long distances and often at short notice. Typical examples include the need to translate medical or legal information over the phone, conducting a business conference call or making travel arrangements. Telephone interpreting is conducted as a three way conversation with the interpreter translating the words of the speaker into the language of the recipient or audience.
Liaison Interpreting is typically a conversation between two people who speak different languages. The interpreter is able to translate from one language to the other and to act as a bridge between the speakers, usually interpreting in short sentences to enable a two-way conversation. It is sometimes used for conversations with more than two people including small meetings and business or diplomatic trips abroad.
Consecutive Interpreting is where the interpreter speaks after the source-language speaker has finished speaking and is our most popular method of interpreting. The speech is divided into segments and the interpreter listens as the speaker delivers the message. When the speaker pauses, the interpreter relays the message in the target language.
Whispered Interpreting is where the interpreter sits or stands next to a small target-language audience whilst whispering a simultaneous interpretation. This is often used when the majority of a group speaks the source language and only one or two people in the target audience require interpretation.
Simultaneous / Conference Interpreting is where the interpreter speaks at the same time as the speaker. This method of interpreting is more formal and is used at larger meetings and conferences only. Sitting in sound-proof booths, two interpreters alternate at approximately fifteen minute intervals delivering the message via a microphone to audience members who are wearing microphones.
